Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the bill by 0.20. For example, a $45.00 bill × 0.20 = $9.00 tip. With this calculator, just enter $45 and select 20% — it does the math instantly.
Either is fine — most people tip on the pre-tax amount. If the service was exceptional, tipping on the full post-tax total is a nice gesture. Enter whichever amount you prefer in the bill field.
15–18% is considered standard for average service, 20% for good service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. Many people default to 20% as a simple rule.
Set "Number of people" to the size of your group. The calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally among all people and shows each person's share.
Round up bumps each person's share to the nearest whole dollar, making it easy to collect cash without dealing with coins.

How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping norms vary by service and country. In the United States, 15–18% is considered standard for adequate service, 20% for good service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. For counter service or takeout, 10–15% is common. Bartenders typically receive $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Hotel housekeeping is usually $3–5 per night. Always check if a service charge or gratuity has already been added to the bill — double tipping is rare but easy to do by accident.

Splitting the Bill Fairly

The simplest approach is an even split: divide the total (including tip) equally among all people. This works well when everyone ordered similarly. For groups with big price differences, each person can calculate their share plus tip individually. The "round up" option in this calculator makes cash collection easier — instead of dealing with exact cents, each person pays a whole dollar amount, and any overage is left as extra tip.

Tax vs. No Tax

Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a personal choice. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common and saves a small amount; tipping on the post-tax total is more generous. For a $50 meal with 8% tax and 20% tip, the difference is about $0.80 — not significant, but worth knowing.
