Frequently Asked Questions
How good is the background removal quality?+
This tool uses the IS-Net segmentation model (shipped with the open-source @imgly/background-removal library) — a state-of-the-art model that produces results comparable to paid services like remove.bg. It handles portraits, product photos, animals, and logos well; very fine hair and fur edges can be softer than dedicated paid services.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your images are never sent anywhere — all processing happens on your device. This makes it completely private and safe for sensitive or confidential images.
Why does the first image take longer to process?+
The first time you use the tool, it downloads the AI model (~100 MB) from a CDN. This download happens once and is permanently cached in your browser — every subsequent image processes in seconds without any download.
Can I download with a white or custom background instead of transparent?+
Yes. After processing, use the background selector below the image to choose transparent (PNG), white, black, or any custom colour. The chosen background is applied when you click Download.
What types of images work best?+
The AI works best on portraits, product photos on plain backgrounds, animals, and logos. Images with high contrast between subject and background produce the cleanest cutouts. Very low-resolution images or subjects that blend into similarly-coloured backgrounds may produce less precise edges.
Is there a file size or resolution limit?+
No artificial limits. The tool processes at your image's full original resolution — it does not downsample or compress your image. The only constraint is your device's available memory, which can comfortably handle images up to 30–50 MB on modern hardware.
Can I remove backgrounds in bulk?+
Yes. Drop up to 5 images at once and the tool processes them sequentially. Each result is available for individual download or you can download all at once.

How AI Background Removal Works
This tool uses the IS-Net image segmentation model, shipped with the open-source @imgly/background-removal library — a state-of-the-art deep-learning model that identifies the foreground subject in your photo and cleanly separates it from the background. The same class of AI model powers many paid background removal services.
Unlike simpler chroma-key (green screen) or edge-detection approaches, IS-Net uses deep learning to understand the semantic content of the image. It recognises people, products, animals, logos, and objects and produces clean, high-quality cutouts on most photos; very fine hair and fur edges can come out slightly softer than dedicated paid services.
Why your images stay private
The entire model runs inside your browser using WebAssembly and ONNX Runtime Web. Your images are never sent to any server — the processing happens entirely on your own device. The model weights (~100 MB) download once from a CDN on first use and are permanently cached in your browser, so every subsequent image processes instantly without any download.
Tips for the best results
For the sharpest cutouts: use high-resolution images, ensure there is reasonable contrast between the subject and background, and avoid images where the subject blends into a background of a very similar colour. Portrait photos, product shots on plain surfaces, and animal photos typically produce excellent results.
